Following the winds of change

Change is an odd bird, most people feel compelled to change when it becomes more uncomfortable NOT to change than remaining where they are. If people are better prepared for what’s to come, they are more likely to start down the change path.

Oh Boy, were we becoming uncomfortable.

It’s a weird sensation, being the champion of preparing people for change in my work life, and ignoring the signs in our personal life, but that is exactly what happened.

This website will tell you the reasons we are choosing a temporary gypsy life and getting rid of so many of our things, but suffice it to say, the universe’s push has not been subtle.

We live our lives with purpose. We love people, doing the best for people, caring for others, and giving. That was the whole premise of starting our business in 2008, and remains instrumental in all we do.

Companies were using the term “change management” for a series of functions they saw as wrapping an attractive skin around the same old project monsters. Candy coated arsenic is still arsenic – no matter how tasty the coating. You must offer the whole package, or it just doesn’t work.

Years of studying and researching how people move through change seemed immaterial to many project budgets. “If people don’t like it, they can leave.” Was the sentiment, it appeared.

So, the story goes, the major gaps that are creating engagement issues, fatigue, and stress among workers in record numbers were being highly ignored and our desire to help companies who kept failing to buy were causing fatigue and stress within our lives.

So, we took a deep look at our lives and our business and we decided a major shift was needed.

  1. We were drowning in personal stuff – objects we’d collected over the years, two lives merged, things given to us we did not know what to do with, and stuff we’d carted around feeling obligated to keep.
  2. We were drowning in compassion fatigue – knowing what and how to could help companies and watching their projects implode because they never prioritized the budget for it.

This is where the story of ‘Our Life in a Box’ begins. The deep pain of too much crap and the fatigue from watching people suffer needlessly through change.

We are on a journey to bring the joy back into our lives, serve people where our gifts are wanted, and make a small difference in our little part of the world.

Love,

Patti and Walt
